Alma Rosae: The Gangster Pop Rapper

Alma Rosae is a Bosnian rooted artist based in California, with a Wild Child essence to herself, she tries to lay it as well on her music. With a pop star innate voice and gangster rapper aggressiveness, Rosae has increasingly expanded her audience and artistry in a remarkably short time span.

Growing up in a Bosnian family, Alma Rosae was exposed to a multicultural environment with much eastern European influence. However, she grew up listening to “classic Rock Stars” the sounds of Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath among others. This we believe helped develop her Wild Child personality that is up and front in her tracks.

Alma is proud of her Bosnian heritage and “Ako Bog Da” is her “war element” on the table. A Bosnian rapped tune is something fresh in the market, and as Rosae would put it, exotic is always as tentative as it gets. She finds beauty in her particular mixture and distinctive, “hood and foreign” quality, which she aims to make the most of in her upcoming projects.

For our guest, a rap song in her native language not only meant to reclaim a lost part of herself regarding roots and culture. It also meant a statement on the adversities of life and society, all in correlation to the lost innocence and dragged consequences of the Bosnian war. Rosae had a paced maturity process, a displacement suffered from a tough upbringing.

When discussing her initiation in music, Rosae confessed she’s always been a musical person. Growing up her mother got her into choir which was paralleled with piano and guitar lessons she would later use to entertain in family or friends’ reunions. In essence, she’s been a charismatic entertainer ever since a young age. Alma went through college lingering on her love and hype for music just being in the studio was enough to spark her ambitious side.

She’s also learned a lot from her experience as an aspiring artist, but a bad deal with a label and bad experiences led her to Legacy Studios in Richmond, California. Luigi, the studio owner saw the potential in Alma and launched her from his platform. As Rosae started dropping tunes, she eventually partnered up with Stephen Jackson, an Artist Manager at Project S Music whom she credits for bringing her out of her shell and reinventing her Wild Child image.

We asked Alma about her creative process, she told us that her work is typically direct with producers and pre-laid tracks or beats. Once she finds a connection to the beat and music she gets to work on melodies and lyrics. From start to finish she usually takes up to 30 minutes to work the basis of a song. However, the meticulous curation of the end product is her obsession.

We also inquired about her dream collaborations, to which she confessed that she aims to work with high profiled producers instead of artists. Dr. Dre however is perhaps the dream come true for Alma, we can see something massive in that team.

When discussing her influences and sound, Alma pointed towards her favorite rap artists like Ben Drew, Pimp C, and Webbie. She identified the importance of west coast rap in her music as well as R&B, it all adds up to the contrast between aggressiveness and her pop voice. This is particularly noticeable in her track Nothing lasts forever to which she noted: “I feel like we created a new genre, I’m very proud of what we’ve made”.

The magic of spontaneously working a song in a matter of minutes is that it allows her to stick to the prime and most genuine essence of it. This guarantees a safe and high-quality final product for Alma.

Rosae wanted to let her audience know that, despite how corny it may sound, it is crucial to follow your dreams from day one. “ You don’t wanna look back at your 20s and go over the would have could have should have, never look back”. Spoken like a true go-getter, this is perhaps the best way to describe Alma Rosae, her journey through life has been paved with ups and downs. However, she’s never been happier than today, a fully musically invested day chasing her dreams.
