Check out our Q&A with AYISA below.
What first got you into music?
I’ve always really been so entranced by music from a young age. I used to re-watch Disney movies to learn the songs and eventually watched solely to sing along. I would sing songs to myself that I would improv as a way to cope with any life experiences. My mom put me in piano and dance lessons and these expanded my interpretation of music.
Out of all of the songs you’ve released, which one is your favorite and why?
My favorite song that I’ve released is probably IRMOH because it has a really deep meaning to it. I wrote this as a means to deal with a childhood trauma I thought I would never outgrow. It was a mantra I wrote for myself, inspired by my mother’s resilience in life, which is why she is the album art.
Where is your favorite place where you’ve had the opportunity to perform?
My favorite place is probably the Five07 coffee shop in Thousand Oaks because performing there is intimate and it feels like home. The couple who owns it are such lovely and amazing people, too. Literally, out of everywhere, including my previous projects run of shows, this is definitely my favorite place because of that.
Which musician or producer would you most like to collaborate with?
I think it would be so amazing to work with Pharrell. He’s been in the business for so long, and he’s such a talented producer, I feel like I have so much I want to learn from him.
If you could have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
That I am and always will be genuine about everything I say and do.
What is your creative process like?
It’s meditative. I clear my mind and allow my subconscious thoughts to drive me into the direction I feel is right. Once I have an initial idea, I run with it and think of different variations of how to portray what I’m trying to say. This way means that the process will always be different depending on whatever I’m feeling in that moment.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Probably law school.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Work smart, don’t burn yourself out, and don’t give up even if feel like you want to!
Is there anything you would like to add or anything new we should be looking out for?
Follow me on all socials (IG, Twitter, FB, and YouTube) and keep an eye out for new music in 2021!!
