Q&A With LA Playlist Featured Artist: Stereo Jane
What inspires your sound?
We grew up around so much amazing music. We like to keep rock influences in our songs even if it’s a really subtle part. Another one is soul, and Aretha Franklin is one of the singers who influenced me (Sydney) as a singer. I definitely sing with a lot of power! As the Drummer (Mia) I grew up idolizing John Bonham and that way he made the drumming so effortless. I think about how in the pocket he was every time we play live.
How long have you been making your own music?
Since we were 8 years old. That’s when we started our band!
Who is your favorite artist? Do you draw any sounds or styles from them?
It’s funny because we’re both into such different music today. We always say you don’t have to sound like the people you listen to. And it’s true in a lot of ways! Some of the current artists we love are Sam Fender, Harry Styles, and Hobo Johnson. I guess you could say we all share some of those rock tendencies.
What is your creative process like? (do you write the music or the melody first)
We usually write the music and then the melodies! Once those two are locked in, we write lyrics. But it differs every time!
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
If it wasn’t for music, I (Mia) would probably be living in Michigan, still trying to figure out what I want to do in life. I don’t spend too much time thinking about what could have been, I like to think that because I choose the music it’s gotten me right where I want to be. I’m very grateful to be where I am in life. I (Sydney) have no idea what I’d be doing. No matter what it would always have something to do with music.
What is the best advice you’ve been given? (musically or non-musically).
Don’t write for anyone but yourselves. It ruins the writing process when you’re so focused on what other people want!
What is something you would tell your fans?
Be creative in this time of uncertainty. Draw, write, read! Anything to keep your mind going!
Would you like to collaborate with anyone? If so, who and why?
We’ve always said Post Malone would be such a killer collab. We love his sound and think we could create something super cool.
