Q&A With AV On the Radar Featured Artist: Carolyn Hunter
Ambient Vibes had the opportunity to ask Carolyn Hunter a synth-folk-pop artist residing in Colorado some questions. I hope you enjoy!
New song out "Felt Like Love" what is the backstory?
This song is about the moment you fall in love. The feelings of unexplained connection, desire, lust and confusion that arise in those moments with another. The wondering if they feel it too. The physical body turning on like a light when you feel seen and loved from another. The experience of falling that feels like flying. And the battle between speaking it out loud, or forever waiting for sureness from the other.
What was it like producing and songwriting for the song?
It started as a mumbling voice memo, then on to a melody with acoustic guitar, just me and my guitar in a shed in the summertime. I brought it to my producer Julian Peterson for workshopping, and messing with electronic beats. I had been wanting to make music that vibrated at a frequency of dancing for a long time and I think we nailed it. Layers of drum samples, electric guitar, and experimenting, before we brought it to Micah Tawlks in Nashville who tracked live drums and synth bass and pushed us harder on the vocal production and overall sound.
You were in a band before, what did you learn from that experience?
Being in a band is one of my most favorite things in life. It reminds me of being on a soccer team when I was a child, working together for a common goal. Also like being a part of a family. I love the feeling of a supported unit. Moving forward in creating a new band...I think I learned to let people be themselves, to not engage in jealousy, to let the people you love fly free, to be guided by my internal creative vision and to be brave enough to speak it out loud over and over again.
What got you into music?
As a kid I was always singing along to the radio, making up dances with friends, putting on shows for friends and family. I was cast as Annie when I was 12 in a touring theater company, and got addicted to performing musical theater. I have always loved the way singing makes me feel and makes other people smile and engage with me.
What is your favorite magical or mythological animal?
A phoenix or perhaps a mermaid.
What about your music is rebellious, unconventional or unusual?
It is wholesome and evocative. It is honest and not righteous. Most of the time it vertebrates between two dualities. Paradoxical.
What draws you to your preferred genre?
A feeling of sensuality, light, and authenticity that dance together.
You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?
I've sworn off Karaoke in the America forever.
What's next for you and your career? Next project? Tell us all!
My forthcoming solo debut album "Lovelight" will be released Fall 2021!! Performing the songs live with a band, doing all the work to bring the record out into the world. After that...more dance music. More light, more source-fed tunes and more collaboration.
